South Dakota Speech-Language-Hearing Association Annual Convention

Thank you for your patience and input as the SDSLHA Executive Council has monitored the COVID situation and addressed our convention plans. Your input in our most recent convention survey indicated that the vast majority of members would not consider attending an on-site event on our currently scheduled convention dates of February 25 & 26. In addition, speakers and exhibitors are not able to attend the event in-person due to employer travel restrictions and personal concerns regarding COVID.

We contacted our convention venue, the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Sioux Falls to discuss options for our contract. Options to hold the event as scheduled with additional A/V expenses to pivot to a hybrid on-site/online event, and rescheduling to a date later in 2021 with a $1000 penalty now and no options for cancelling the contract for that date were offered by the hotel. A third option of rescheduling a smaller, 1-day event later in 2021 was requested by SDSLHA, but this would not allow us to cancel our current contract without penalty.

The Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Sioux Falls asserts that there are no government regulations in place in South Dakota or Sioux Falls that legally prohibit us from holding the event in February, or later in 2021 (with a $1000 penalty paid now), so we are being held to our event contract. While it may not be illegal to hold the convention, it is not feasible due to speaker travel restrictions, vendor participation, and association member attendance. It is the position of the SDSLHA Executive Council that the damage to our reputation as a professional association dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals with disabilities is not something we are prepared to risk by attempting to hold a large in-person gathering during the pandemic. We are disappointed that the Hilton Garden Inn does not share the concerns that prevent us from holding the event.

SDSLHA will be paying a cancellation fee of $11,543.00 to the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Sioux Falls. We will be using our resources to offer an online convention in the winter/spring of 2021. Our hope is that this online offering will offer more health security and flexibility in attendance for everyone and that you will support this event as we attempt to recoup the costs lost to the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Sioux Falls.

The Business Meeting Minutes from the 2020 SDSLHA Business Meeting are now available. The meeting, normally held during Convention, was held via Zoom on Thursday October 8, 2020. View the Business Meeting Minutes here.
