Becky CermakPresident, SMAC and STARS Rep.

Becky graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from South Dakota State University, and graduated in 2004 with Master of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota. Becky has been a member of ASHA since 2005. Becky has worked as a medical Speech-Language Pathologist in the Northern Black Hills region since 2005. She works for Spearfish Regional Hospital in multiple settings, including acute care, outpatient care, long-term care, home health and hospice. In April 2007, Becky became the MICS and STAR representatives for the South Dakota Speech-Language Hearing Association.

 
Julie Carl: President Elect (2011)

Julie Carl is the Speech-Language Pathologist for South Dakota Achieve.  She graduated from South Dakota State University in 1994 with a B.S. in Communication Disorders, and then attended Moorhead State University to earn her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology.  She has served as the Speech-Language Pathologist for 4 nursing homes in the Aberdeen and Sisseton areas, did home visits for Birth to Three Connections, and consulted for two school districts before finding her true calling in July of 2000 as the Speech-Language Pathologist at South Dakota Achieve.  Julie loves helping and hopefully improving the communication, swallowing and sensory needs of adults with developmental disabilities.  She lives in Sioux Falls with her husband Gary, 10 year-old twin girls Morgan and Madison and their 2 year old daughter, Maia.

Shelly lives in Sioux Falls with her family. She graduated from SDSU with a BS in 1992 and from USD with an MA in 1994. She has been ASHA certified since 1994, and practiced in the medical field as a speech/language pathologist until 2004. She currently works at the Center for Disabilities as the Director of Services & Supports, and continues to provide speech/language evaluation services for the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome clinic. She has been a member of SDSLHA for the past few years, and is excited to be a part of the organization!


 

 

Amanda Heibult: Vice-President of Speech Language Pathology

Amanda lives in Sturgis with her two dogs and enjoys all of the outdoor activities that the hills have to offer! She received her BS in education for BHSU in 2003 and MS in Speech-Language Pathology for Nova Southeastern in 2006 and as been a member of ASHA since 2003. She has worked in a variety of settings including: acute care, outpatient, long-term care, home health, and schools. Amanda recently established Therapy Solutions with an OT colleague and continues to work with home health, long-term care and pediatrics.

Teresa Fendrich:  Vice-President of Audiology

Teresa graduated with a BA in communication disordersfrom     the University of South Dakota, an MS in audiology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and recently obtained her Doctor of Audiology degree from Salus University. Originally from Rapid City, she lives in Sioux Falls with her family. She is employed at Avera McKennan Hospital. Areas of interest include pediatric audiology, amplification, and balance assessment.

Liz graduated from the University of South Dakota with her BA in 1996 and her MA in 1998. She worked for 7 years with Educational Service Unit #1  in northeast Nebraska. Since 2005, Liz has been employed as an Instructor at the University of South Dakota teaching Intro, Language Development, Clinical Methods, and Organic SLP as well as supervising graduate clinicians.  She is also the Speech-Language Pathology Clinic Coordinator.  Liz resides in Vermillion with her husband, Craig, and two children, Tyler and Kate.

Carrie graduated from the University of South Dakota with a BA in Communications Disorders in 1997 and from the University of Iowa with an MA in Speech Pathology in 2000. She has worked in both urban and rural medical settings, as well as with children in the Birth To Three Program and school settings. Currently, she provides contract services to rural school districts and medical facilities in Southeastern SD, Northwestern Iowa, and Southwestern MN. Carrie resides in Tea, SD with her husband and children.

Brittany Schmidt lives in Renner, SD with her husband and 3 girls.  She started a consulting business in August of 2009 call Autism Behavioral Consulting (www.abc-autism.com).  Her business consists of training, consultative and diagnostic services for individuals with an Autism Spectrum or Other Developmental Disability.  Her free time is spent attending the activities of her kids and reading.

Jennifer Schultz

Jennifer is speech-language pathologist for South Central Education Cooperative, providing services for children from birth through high shcool in Menno and Scotland, SD school districts and area Hutterite colonies. She received her M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Iowa in 1991 and worked as a speech-language pathologist for Sanford Hospital from 1992 to 2000. Jennifer was SDSLHA President in 2003-2004. She and her husband, Loren have 2 children. They live on a farm near Freeman, SD.

Cristy graduated from Minot State University with my B.S. degree in Communication Disorders in 2000. She received her M.S. degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2002 from the University of Wyoming. Cristy currently works as an SLP for Just For Kids Speech Therapy in Rapid city, serving New Underwood, Oelrichs, and Red Shirt schools. Prior to this, Cristy worked for Children's Care Rehab and Development Center, Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, and Northwest Area Schools Cooperative.  Cristy lives in Sturgis with her 5-year-old son Bryan, two dogs Chipper and Cosmo, and a cat named Chubs.


Kathleen Mays:  State Advocacy Education Leader

My career in speech began when I served as a certified “Speech Teacher” in the state of Colorado for 12 years.  I went back to school and earned a B.S. in Communication Disorders in 1997, M.S. in Speech Language Pathology in 1999 from Fort Hays State University – Hays, Kansas. I worked in Wyoming at a Child Development Center doing Birth to 3 and Evanston Regional Hospital for 3 years. I began working for Children’s Care of Rapid City in 2003, mainly serving schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation. I became the Clinical Lead for the Speech Department in 2005, and in October of 2006 became the Clinic Director.  I live in Rapid City with my two teenagers, Kurstin and Michael.
